Problem: Damage to the rendering to the front gable was noted. This had been exacerbated by the application of a waterproof decoration which allowed rainwater to become trapped behind the decoration resulting in water ingress to the fabric of the building. This section of the property was of timber frame construction with the framing timbers being exposed to the elements with no form of decoration. The frame timbers would have been protected, when constructed, by lath and lime render. Any decoration applied to the timbers should not be a waterproof sealant as the timbers need to breathe. Where dampness has or can enter a building there is a possibility that Wet Rot or Dry Rot can occur in adjacent timbers. We prepared a specification and estimate to protect the frame timbers and prevent penetrating damp to the gable.
