Problem: Using a conductivity moisture meter in the walls of the problem areas, minor positive readings were recorded, indicating the lack of an effective damp proof course in the wall construction combined with penetrating dampness from malfunctioning rainwater goods. There was therefore localised deterioration of the plaster above the skirting boards as well.
Works completed: Whilst the cottage is used by the church, it’s construction and age does not designate it as a listed building, so we were able to recommend dry lining the elevations, incorporating a vertically applied waterproof membrane for damp proofing. We began by removing all affected skirting boards from the treatment areas and set them aside. Then hacked off and disposed of the damp-spoiled wall plaster, to ceiling height. The ceiling was cut back sufficiently to vent the membrane into the void above, allowing an escape route for future moisture. We supplied and installed a Delta System Meshed Membrane up to ceiling height, followed by the supply and installation of a Delta Ventilation Profile at the base of the walls. New plasterboard was supplied and applied to the membrane, including a skim finish multi-purpose plaster ready for the client to decorate. For the ceiling, we then supplied and installed insulated plasterboard.
