Exterior of the former warehouse with salt contamination behind disused fireplace

Location: Weedon Bec, Northamptonshire

Type of property: Brick built former warehouse circa 19th century

Services used:

  • Damp survey
  • Dry lining waterproofing

Materials Used:

  • Delta System MS500 Membrane
  • Delta System Meshed Membrane

Problem:

The area concerned was the rear of a former fireplace.

Using a conductivity moisture meter, positive readings were recorded on internal wall surfaces rising from skirting board level to ceiling height, and salt contamination was visually identified. This was the result of the combination of one or more of the following:

  1. The lack of an effective damp proof course in the wall construction
  2. Penetrating dampness from the raised external ground level
  3. Prior combustion of fossil fuels resulting in soot penetration of the masonry
  4. Prior combustion of solid fuels.

Works completed:

We recommended dry lining the affected section incorporating a vertically applied membrane, this being allowed to vent into the floor void above.

We:

Supplied and installed Delta System MS500 Membrane from base level to ceiling height.

Supplied and installed Delta System Meshed Membrane to ceiling level around the fireplace.

Supplied and installed a waterproof wall/floor raglet joint at the membrane base as it abutted the solid construction hearth.
