How to check your sump pump (every 6-12 months)

  • Visual Check: Ensure the chamber is free from silt, debris, or mineral deposits.
  • Float Switch Test: Confirm the pump automatically kicks on when water levels rise.
  • Battery Backup Power: A battery backup (or dual pump system) is an essential bit of kit during heavy winter storms when local power cuts may happen. Check this every year.

 Flushing the perimeter drainage channels (annually): Lime wash, fine silt, or ambient dust from surrounding ground can slowly settle in perimeter channels over years

  • Flush the channels with clean water to clear build-up and ensure water flows freely to the sump.

 Check the non-return valves (annually): Blockages will prevent pumped water from flowing back into the pit.

Not every sign of damp requires an emergency response, but certain situations demand professional intervention as soon as possible:

  • Sump pump alarm activation: High-water alarms mean the pump has failed or cannot keep pace with water flow. Call a specialist immediately.
  • Post-heavy rainfall flooding: If water appears after prolonged or heavy rain, hydrostatic pressure has likely breached a seal or overwhelmed drainage channels.
  • Visible mold spores: Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) compromises indoor air quality and poses health risks, indicating long-term, unmanaged moisture.
